Clyde Coast Services (as the company was known) was formed in April, 1929. The company applied to the local Borough Council for the licence to run the Saltcoats-Largs bus service, and this was duly granted. The original members were Cowie, Shields, McGregor and Hogarth and they were joined two months later by Frazer and Wallace.
Of the founding members, Wallace left in 1933. The Cowie Brothers ceased their operations in 1954. Hogarth retired in 1966, followed by Shields' retiral in 1971. The remaining families of McGregor and Frazer continue to run the business today, and are onto the third generation of family management.
At the time of the company's formation, the primary business came from stage carriage services, principally the Saltcoats-Largs bus route which Clyde Coast operated for over 60 years. The company's bus services were expanded through the years to include routes to Glasgow, Greenock, Irvine and Kilmarnock.
A decision was taken however in 1995 to cease all service operations and concentrate exclusively on coach hire. Whilst the company had always undertaken coach hire in addition to its service routes, during recent times the private hire of coaches had become a significantly larger part of the business.
Today the company continues to focus its primary efforts on the coach hire business, though recent developments have included the acquisition of two petrol filling stations in nearby towns of Fairlie and Stevenston, as well as expansion into the property market.
